Chapter 20

The house was squalid and small, but it would do. It had two small bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. Photographs still sat on the mantel, eerily faded with the passage of years. The ancient console television was broken, and the overstuffed couch was falling apart. The clothes and dolls of a little girl still remained in the closet of a bedroom with faded pink walls. Just the sight of the child’s room made me ache to be with Lysander. I hoped he was still hanging on and wondered if there was any way to contact the sanctuary to check on him.

“You all right?”

I glanced over my shoulder slightly to find Wyatt Jackson standing behind me, like a massive brick wall. There was something friendly about his demeanor, in spite of the barking seriousness with which he had spoken to us all on the plane. “I’m all right,” I said, darting my eyes around the ruins in the room. “I just miss my son,” I finally admitted, shaking my head slightly.

“I’ve heard. I hope everything turns out all right for your boy. It’s brave and selfless of you to be here with us on this.”

“Thanks.” I glanced away. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it’s gotten around the grapevine so fast. I guess it qualifies as tabloid stuff, a sick little hybrid baby.”

“You are really quite famous in our supernatural world,” he said with a small laugh. He then crossed his thick arms and leaned against the doorframe. He glanced over his shoulder and lowered his voice to say, “I noticed Drake’s been cozying up to you—or at least tryin’ to. You all right?”

“I... Yeah.” I rubbed my hand across my forehead. “He infected me with the vampire virus a while ago, the same night I received the wolf virus, but until recently, I managed to avoid death. He remedied that.”

Narrowing his eyes slightly, Jackson glanced over his shoulder again and clicked his tongue behind his teeth. “I’m surprised he was even allowed to come.”

“So am I,” I said, frowning at my feet, “but he’s fluent in Russian and Ukrainian and spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe. He definitely knows the territory. If nothing else, maybe he can help us negotiate. He gets on my nerves in a lot of ways, but there’s no denying he can be quite...persuasive.”

“Like I said on the plane, ma’am, don’t go getting your hopes up too high for striking any deals here. We have no idea what state these folks are in, after living in this toxic place so long, eating and drinking radioactive food and water and even just being exposed to the soil. If they’ve been farming here, I’m not sure that’s good news either. You know what they say.”

“What?”

“You are what you eat.”

I laughed at his dry sense of humor. “Right. How long do you think it takes for a werewolf to be affected by these high levels of radiation?”

“Dr. Rivers said years, realistically speaking,” he answered, “but I get the feeling these wolves have been here a long time.
